Early Life
Deepinder Goyal was born in Muktsar, Punjab. He completed his engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. Like many fresh graduates, he started his career with a corporate job at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm.
While working there, he noticed a simple but frustrating problem.
Every lunchtime, employees would gather around a physical menu book, waiting for their turn to order food. The process was slow, inefficient, and time-consuming.
Most people ignored this daily inconvenience.
Deepinder saw an opportunity.
The Idea
In 2008, he scanned restaurant menus and uploaded them online so that people could browse them without waiting for the physical menu.
The website was initially called Foodiebay.
It quickly gained popularity among office workers in Delhi.
As traffic increased, Deepinder realized this was much bigger than a side project.
He quit his job and focused entirely on building the company.
The Early Challenges
Starting a food-tech startup in India wasn’t easy.
Restaurants were hesitant to partner with a small website.
Funding was limited.
Consumers were not yet comfortable ordering food online.
Many people questioned whether an online restaurant directory could become a real business.
But Deepinder believed that solving a genuine customer problem would eventually create value.
The Turning Point
In 2010, Foodiebay was rebranded as Zomato.
The company expanded rapidly into multiple Indian cities and later entered international markets.
Over time, Zomato evolved from a restaurant discovery platform into a complete food ecosystem, offering:
- Restaurant discovery
- Customer reviews
- Online food ordering
- Table reservations
- Membership programs
- Grocery delivery (through acquisitions and partnerships)
This transformation turned Zomato into one of India’s leading technology companies.
Funding Journey
As the platform grew, investors began to notice its potential.
Zomato raised multiple funding rounds from prominent global investors, enabling rapid expansion across India and overseas.
The company eventually became one of India’s most recognized startup success stories.
IPO Milestone
In 2021, Zomato made history by becoming one of the first major Indian consumer internet startups to go public.
Its Initial Public Offering (IPO) attracted strong investor interest and marked a significant moment for India’s startup ecosystem.
The listing demonstrated that Indian technology startups could build large-scale, publicly traded businesses.
Leadership Philosophy
Deepinder Goyal believes in long-term thinking.
Instead of chasing short-term profits, he has consistently focused on improving customer experience, investing in technology, and building sustainable products.
His approach emphasizes innovation, experimentation, and continuous learning.
